Warning: Talks about violence, murder, stalking
Background:
21-year-old Moe Harukawa and 26-year-old Taiki Hirokawa began dating in October 2024. At the time, both were working at a fast-food restaurant in Hachioji, Tokyo, and everything seemed to be going well. However, in 2025, the relationship began to change when Moe decided to quit her job and pursue her dream position at the Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo in Ikebukuro.
Taiki reportedly became increasingly possessive, repeatedly pressuring Moe to leave her new job. This ultimately led Moe to end the relationship in July 2025. However, Taiki did not accept the breakup as reality.
Following the separation, Taiki began stalking Moe, loitering near her home and acting as a “peeping tom.” He was arrested in late 2025 and again in early 2026 for these offenses. By January 29, 2026, a formal stalking prohibition order had been issued against him.
Despite all of this, Moe was still not safe.
What Happened:
On March 26th, just two months after the order was issued, Taiki committed a violent act. Moe was on shift at the Pokémon Center inside the Sunshine City mall. It was crowded with families and tourists; it seemed like just another day at her dream job. However, the situation shifted quickly. Taiki entered the store and spent about 15 minutes scouting the area. He then jumped over the staff counter and attacked Moe.
Panic ensued among the families and tourists who witnessed the event. Immediately after the attack, Taiki harmed himself. Both were taken to the hospital by emergency responders, but they were unfortunately pronounced dead upon arrival.
Investigation:
Throughout the investigation, several findings and failures came to light. First, authorities determined that the attack was premeditated. Taiki had traveled from Hachioji to Ikebukuro specifically to carry out the attack at Moe’s workplace, knowing he was legally prohibited from going near her home.
It was also revealed that Moe had been in regular contact with the Hachioji police, with her last report made on March 12. Of particular concern—especially among the public—is the fact that Taiki had been released in late January after receiving a summary indictment and a fine, despite having a history of carrying weapons.
